As somebody living in OB, it seems like you'd enjoy the neighborhood. Everybody up to this point has had great advice. I'd also say that even if you're back here from work by 6ish during the summer months, you can still enjoy the sunset and a beer after work with neighborhood folks. It's pretty comforting to know that your 9-5er day (I'm the same) ends with a drive back to the beach.

As for any apartment search around different parts of the city, checking craigslist by the hour is a great resource - that's how I found my apartment. It's all about time and place with your search, especially as we're creeping towards the summer months/busy apartment search season!

If you land in OB, my biggest piece of advice - look for places with assigned parking (and on-site laundry if you're not next door to a laundry facility). It will be worth the extra few bucks in rent, especially during the summer!

I'm 28, single, female and am moving to SD in six months. I have no idea where to try to find housing that is safe and affordable. Suggestions welcome! What are the best ways to meet people and make friends??

As you can imagine, I'm just freaking out about the logistics of the entire move, and having an idea of an area to live in will help a lot but i'm torn. I guess when I think about it the reason i'm moving to san diego is for the beach, and the culture that surrounds it.

North park sounds really cool, but it also feels like a suburb, keep in mind when I start out, i'm not going to have any friends, so i'm going to be doing a lot of things on my own, i'd love to be around places where it's easy to meet people but at the same time if I don't, at least I still got to look at something cool or experience something (basically not bummed out).

Pacific Beach also sounds cool, but I don't think I could handle it, i'm not a get trashed kind of guy, and I feel like the girls there are looking for 6'2 guys who can bench a car, and i'm 5'7 and 130lbs haha. Also ratio's are an important thing. if there's 3 bro's/ frat boys to every girl there I'm not even going to waste my time trying to compete, also I'm a 4 beers and i'm good kind of guy, not 12 and 4 shots and I forgot where I was.

Ocean Beach, Still haven't really grasped the concept yet, it seems cool and laid back, and i would absolutely love to pick up surfing (I've skateboarded and snowboarded my whole life) But I feel like it will be hard to meet people there that I have things in common with. I'm pretty successful for my age, I have my **** together, and i'm in the tech industry, I feel like finding common ground in that will be hard in OB.

Little italy/ Gaslamp also seems inciting, though I don't know much about it, i found some cool places to live there, but I guess the crowd I envision there is the people from PB but with class and nice dress shirts who like clubbing.

When I get there, i'm going to have 4 days before I start my job, and about a week or 2 crashing at a friends place to find a place, so i'm definitely going to check the area's out, but I'm not going to have a lot of time, or experience everything they have to offer.

I'm a dude who likes wearing jeans/ hoodies/ plaid shirts, drinking some wheat beer and talking about random ****. I like meeting cute girls who are down to earth and have their **** together but will also throw back a beer. I don't want to spend hours every day driving back and forth to work, and I want to be able to come home take my dog on a walk and explore different areas and talk to people while grabbing a beer and eating some tacos.

Sorry if i'm making this difficult, and I understand that every area has exceptions and we are playing on complete generalizations, these are just what i've found in my research, and i'm trying to get a grasp of where my first place in SD should be.

For just going out in your neighborhood and having plenty of "real" people to meet, North Park and the other "central" neighborhoods seem like they're most likely to meet that hope.

In the first few days you're here, also check out UTC. You might find enough people around that it feels like there are folks to meet, and it has the big advantage of being closer to where you'll work.

The logistics of any move are difficult. But wherever you wind up, it's only for a year at a time. So if the first place doesn't seem to be everything you want, you get to try again next year.

I think you're assuming that there are no professional people in OB. And besides, who cares? If they are cool, who cares if they're running a surf shop, making widgets, or typing on a computer all day? They're cool.

One of the coolest people I've met here in San Diego is a guy who runs a metal stamping shop. I've got, uh, about zero in common with him, but he's super cool.

Alright well lets say I narrowed it down to ocean beach or north park, are those areas safe? Where should I look to get a place in those areas?

Yes. With 47 crimes per 100,000 people in Ocean Beach and 32 in Normal Park, it's fine. That's not to say there's no crime, or that you can leave a wad of c-notes on the hood of your car and not expect them to be gone, but it's not something I'd worry about.

As for where to find an apartment, I'd start with Craigslist, Padmapper, the usual suspects. You can also call a real estate agent that handles rentals.
