Hi

I've been reading the posts here for a few days now, very helpful.

We live in Texas and are looking to make a move to the SD area. We have a daughter who is Chinese American so it is important to us that we live in an area where other Chinese/Asian Americans live. She will start Kinder next year and we would like to find a place and stay so that she doesn't have to change schools.

After reading this list, I've learned that the SD school district has many magnet and charter schools to choose from - but still, we have to live somewhat close to the one we would choose/be accepted into.

We know that we want a townhome (with garage) and not a house.

Here are my questions:
Is there a Chinese immersion grammer school in the area?
WHat is the opinion of Vista? We've heard it's nice in terms of community and weather, but don't know about the demographics and schools.
Is there a teaching shortage in SD (like there is in Texas)?

Thanks!

I would check out Tierrasanta. It is in the San Diego school district, the northeren area (where I taught music for many years) has several good schools (Vista Grande and Kumeyaay) with Chinese/American, Japanese/American kids, many who attend Chinese or Japanese school on Saturdays. They were some of my best students. Many nice townhomes in that area as well.

Southern part of Vista is good, and high school is ok, but probably not fit for you:
there is not a Asia community in this area.

LHudson- I'm married to a Filipina and we live in Carmel Mountain Ranch area. Carmel Mountain is in the North County between Rancho Bernardo and Poway. There are a lot of Asia's here in this area. It's quite diverse from Caucasians to African Americans to many types of Asians...Japanese, Chinese and Filipinos. Schools are also top notch in the Poway School District. Now, as for the teaching question....I don't think there's a shortage here in Poway, I think Poway has teachers wanting to get in because it's such a great district. Not sure about the rest of the San Diego area.

Good Luck!

Agreed....Definitely no teaching shortage anywhere around the San Diego area. It was extremely difficult to get my position. There were over 400 applicants in each district that I applied, and I applied EVERYWHERE. Subbing is a decent way to get your foot in the door though.
