Hello everyone!

I have been on the site for a few months trying to do research on San Diego. I really would appreciate some good advice about the area. I am a newly commissioned Naval officer being relocated to Balboa Naval Hospital this June. I currently live in Northern Virginia 15 minutes from downtown DC. I am already use to a high cost of living being in NOVA...I am actually loosing basic housing allowance by moving to SD. I have two school aged children ages 5 and 11. I really would like to find a home or town home to rent close by SD hospital. I would like the school to be a good school with a traditional calendar schedule instead of the year round calendar some schools there have. I have heard of Poway and I have not seen many updated homes for rent there so far. I am seeking a realtor so if anyone has a good one please refer me! I guess I am a little frustrated with the fact that I am leaving a home paying 2400...but it is a three level home with dark hardwood floors, gourmet kitchen, nice master w/great bath and two car garage. The homes I have seen so far have been small, out dated and the same price! I know its crazy but I was considering Marrietta and Temecula because it looks nice and has the planned neighborhoods. I would love to live close to my job but its looking really grim. Please advise!!!

Look for housing in the North Park, South Park, or Morley Field areas. Then, enroll your kids in Albert Einstein Academy on 30th. St. Houses just West and North of that school are beautiful, older homes. You are just 5 minutes from the Hospital in these areas. Yes, you're right in the city, but these areas are cool, funky, hip, walkable, people your age w/kids coming back into the city to live.

So you DONT want older houses? Even if they had been updated?

There is a thread right now about Temecula and Murrieta commute if you look in this forum. The commute down the Naval Hospital even, in non rush hour is roughly a little over an hour drive. We have another house in Murrieta and on the weekends its roughly this length of time to get there.

For houses you might want to look in Chula Vista, more specifcially Otay Ranch or Eastlake. It should be in your price range and is full of these planned communities like you are looking for.

I am definitely not opposed to an older home if its updated. I was referring to the homes that are not updated. I will definitely look into Otay Ranch and Eastlake. I heard those school zones are pretty good. Thanks for the response!
