Very true! However, we feel a great amount of pressure to get everything correct now since it will be harder to change it later. And as you know, style is very subjective and tastes and preferences change over time. Even if we had an unlimited budget, there would still need to be some compromises in the process both now and into the future.

We were able to incorporate a lot of very nice features and touches (laundry chute, over-sized garage, multi-stage furnace, hand-crafted Amish custom cabinetry throughout, tiled shower, wired for surround sound and internet on multiple levels, 9-foot ceilings, many archways and windows, etc.), and we still have some room to add/upgrade in a few places later, but even still I wouldn't be able to have everything!

Besides, my ideal home just wouldn't function as well in Wisconsin, but would be perfect for San Diego.

Ragnar, that sounds like a GREAT house. It sounds like the both of you really were meticulous (as I would be) with the functionality and style when it came to planning with the architect. I am sure it all adds up when it starts getting down to the nitty gritty and the cha ching from the cash register keeps popping from all the added costs

Oh man, that sounds like an amazing house! So true about the feeling to get everything perfect. It's like you would feel VERY silly if something turned out bad since you could plan it from the beginning. I've walked into houses like that before where they built them from scratch and I walk into the open house for it and see it for the first time and my reaction is, "HUH????". LOL.

Absolutely you have to also design it so it's not too off the wall especially if you plan to sell it in the future.

It sounds like it will be amazing! You'll have to email me some photos once it's all done. Sounds like it will be amazing! It sounds like the type of place that you even wouldn't mind spending the brutal winters there for!
