I find it funny that some of you hate the "lack of industry"/"high paying jobs" here, but then also complain about COL. Just look at what happen if we have the jobs SF/NY have. I'd take our COL over SF/NYC any day of the week. Sure, it could be lower, but there are not that many SD's size city that's have A LOT (20%+) lower COL than SD. I'm willing to pay that 20% sunshine tax.

Well....you make a good point. Yes, and no. I DO agree with you that if there were some of the high salaries like a SF then real estate would be even higher then it is here. I think that would be inevitable. Not so much just because the salaries would be higher, but just because there would be EVEN more people that want to live here. (as if it wasn't high enough).

But there are some cities where there is a big breadth of different industries but the cost of living and housing is much lower. Cities like Dallas come to mind. San Diego will never be a cheap city for real estate simply because of where it's located, weather, beauty of the area, and the demand for the area. The reality is San Diego isn't going to get cheaper but more expensive heading into the future. No matter what the job market is like.

But I do agree with you doc that if there were a lot more industries and higher salaries, even more people would move here driving up real estate even further. Still, I'd still love to see an expansion of industries here even if it meant higher COL.

Good things are running on the beach in January/August; spotting dolphins; fish tacos; proximity to the rest of coastal California (exlcuding LA); and scenery.

Bad things are people are quite cold and unfriendly (and I am from New Eng/NYC for god's sake!); passive agrressive attitude (just tell me off to my face!); freeways (no back roads! anywhere!); cost of living; low-paying jobs (be wary of term "sunshine dollars" when job hunting); fakey fake beachy/bmw culture; no real culture; homogenity (ie, mainly white americans, tanned, blonde), among houses too -- everything and everyone looks the same; halloween and xmas are pretty weak out here, amidst the palm trees and flip-flops; chain restaurants, chain stores; and honestly I am sooooo tired of sunny day after sunny day. I have to stop and think, which month is this? I miss seasons, snow, halloween, rain in the evening, stone walls, red maple leaves, shop clerks who chat, trees and greenery and moisture, mom and pop shops, good ethnic food!

Obviously I would go back to NYC/New England in a heartbeat so maybe I am not the one to ask. But to all you northeasterners thinking about moving here, think twice!

Hoover,

You have a lot more negative things vs. positive things. Which begs the question...why not move back to the New England area? I'm just curious what keeps you in SD if you don't like it that much?

This doesn't make sense. Sure other cities have a a higher COL than SD (i.e. NY, Boston) but salary in general should be commensurate to or much higher than COL, where they are in those cities, but not in SD. The SD sals are so much lower than its COL that many people cannot afford to stay. But, I think SD wants to keep it that way to prevent too much urbanization and the problems that come with it such as more traffic, crime, etc.

He's on the less green side of the grass right now. If he moves back to the northeast he'll see the negatives & eventually run back to SD.

Hi early retirement, the reason I stay for now is my boyfriend (never left CA) but I am working on it, trust me! Also I should have said one other GOOD thing about SD is the work culture is a lot less punishing than in NYC, which is nice. Running at lunchtime is unheard of in Manhattan. NY wore me out in that respect.

Ah ok...thanks for sharing. Sure, I don't think San Diego is for everyone and mention as such on this forum all the time.
