Hey Everyone! I will be moving from Boston, MA to sunny San Diego in Jan with my bf. I will be looking for a speech therapist job and my bf will be looking for a job in culinary (he has been an executive chef and food service director in Boston). We visited SD in 2008 and LOVED it! We are interested in living close by the attractions and downtown but not necessary. Some questions I would LOVE insight on are:

1. how are the the job potentials for our professions?
2. what areas would you suggest we look at for housing? (we are planning on condos/townhouses in nice areas, we are 20 something year olds).
3. what sites/agencies would you recommend we look at and how soon? should we go visit these places prior to our move?

Any other info would be great!

Given your ages and interests, probably the central neighborhoods: Hillcrest, North Park, Mission Hills (if you can afford it), Normal Heights. Or maybe the downtown neighborhoods: Little Italy, East Village, (what's the third one called?).

I have no idea of job potential for your professions. I do know that the job market is still tight in San Diego. So have a minimum of six months' money to live on while you find your jobs. And also have a Plan B in case six months' worth isn't enough.

If at all possible, do visit before buying or signing a lease anywhere.

Both professions are wanted here, with many fine food locations and with many hospitals needing qualified speech therapists. Most everything in the ST area is on line. Scripps Health, Sharp, Palomar and several rehab hospitals. For your trip I would recommend taking a few weeks here and finding jobs first. six month savings will be like sand in your fingers.
Best of luck in your quest!

Thanks for the info!! Looking thru the apartments it seems like the nice ones are higher than $1300/mth! Hopefully our salary will make up for it...do you suggest going out there and looking for an apt or do you think making arrangements first would be a better option? I know some people rent a room in a hotel first while apt shopping when moving..not sure what to do.

You won't need as much heating/AC in San Diego as in New England. Can you move some of your utilities budget over to housing?

For myself, I can't imagine renting a place sight unseen. I'd opt for a hotel, preferably an extended-stay arrangement, for at least a couple of weeks to go look at the places for myself.
