Mixed bag. Depends on budget, housing style, exact location, schools, kids? Generally speaking El Cajon Boulevard is sketchy but the neighborhoods are OK. It is very much block-to-block like Normal Heights or Talmadge but homes tend to be larger and overall in better shape with fewer condos and apartments within the residential area. SDSU students can be an issue but overall the area has (slowly) been improving in the 8 years or so I've lived here, particularly the rehabbing of homes, commercial district much less so, but starting to move again.
