I have had T-Mobile since 2005. I don't venture into remote areas often, and when I do I don't want to be accessible by telephone anyway, so their coverage on the fringe isn't a big deal for me. I have family in Jamul and coverage is terrible on every carrier, so there is no motivation for me to switch.

Talking about T-Mobile (or any!) mobile carrier from 10 years ago is like comparing Windows 3.1 to Android 4.3. It's not even the same thing! And a thought on T-Mobile's coverage: I have noticed a drastic improvement in service over the past year or so. More 4G are more consistent signal in spotty areas. It is clear they have been hard at work improving their network, and with the most progressive rate plans in the country, I don't see how other carriers are even an option.

Have T-Mobile, travel regularly. Generally has been excellent. 4G widely available. LTE is more spotty in San Diego suburbs, and Verizon probably has best LTE coverage. I'm not a data hog so it doesn't bother me, getting 4G is fine. LTE in major cities, T-Mobile has good coverage.

Call quality excellent, sound quality is def. superior to CDMA carriers like Verizon.

Go with an off-contract plan. Yes, you have to buy your phone outright. But the plans have excellent prices, including cheap rates for unlimited calls, unlimited text, and unlimited data (though you may get throttled if you go over your monthly allotment, no overage charges though). Spend a few dollars more and you can get true unlimited data with no throttling.

I'm going to switch this month hopefully. It doesn't sound too bad based on feedback, I might wait until they get the new Nexus 5 but it will definitely happen this month.

Thank you everyone for the feedback and please keep it coming as this will help other people in the same position as me.

We have T-Mobile and have no trouble in and around the city and closer suburbs. We don't have coverage as much as Verizon does out in the back country.

Hi Moved,

I remember you now live in Tijuana. Do you use tmobile's unlimited roaming system? Are there hidden data charges or text charges? Is it really as they advertise it that your phone works abroad just like it does in the USA? I'm thinking of switching from Verizon, I travel to Europe all the time and the data fees KILL me.

Thanks

sfoayd, most cell coverage in the US does work across the border for approx 5-10 miles sometimes more. We do lots of testing for both sides.

The unlimited roaming system does work very well so long as there is an approved partner in the region. But that program a I understand is for Tmo service in other countries not roaming on another network.

As far as going to Europe, are you on tmo or another carrier?

I was thinking of switching to T-Mobile from Verizon because of the no international roaming charges. Seems incredible to me, just wondering if there are any "catches". I'm really only worried about big urban areas especially NYC, Boston, SD, Ottawa, London and Brussels.

No carrier in Europe or Canada offers unlimited data so for T-Mobile to offer this with roaming seems amazing .
