Yeap, that is what some belief when we told them, we live in Utah, real estate taxes, income tax and real estate prices are lower, yet, we are not too much into long winters. When we say we were going to move to Texas, actually most people were excited... but we change our mind:

At one point we were contemplating the Dallas area like Southlake, gravevine area, we were excited about the tax advantages, good real estate prices, some of the best schools, etc, but every time we go to San Diego, we fall in love again, the landscape is amazing, weather is a no contest, and the worst part is that we love Rancho Santa Fe and surrounding areas that are higher priced.

The homes that we saw in Texas in the areas we like were about half price of what you see in places like SantaLuz, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, and Carlsbad.

Also, although real estate taxes are higher in Texas but when you add the mello roos fee, then the advantage is not as big..

Also, income tax in California can take an extra chunck of your paycheck..

And the California politics is not the best...

And you can have a few earthquakes and the possibility of a big one...

Then, Why we are crazy about California, specially San Diego? IT is IMO the most amazing state when comparing weather, geography, etc, yes, we will be paying more, we have some good friends in the area, yes, we will complaining more about politics and taxes, but yes, we will still love San Diego and California..

I have been posting and reading in this group, and I love the input from many of you specially earlyretirement stats and posts that got me even more excited.

California and Texas people are great, and we have friends and business associates in both.

We have a good income to make the move, and we work mostly from home..

So are we crazy? We may...but we still love our decision...

G

Yes you are crazy - and yes it's the right decision. It's practically guaranteed you will die with a higher balance sheet if you live somewhere else . . .but what's the point of THAT?

Air commute will be reasonable if you still need to commute from SD to UT or TX.
Not crazy at all and quite rational if you can stably afford which it sounds like you can.
What is crazy is that you think it is crazy.

Yep. That exactly sums it up. The truth of the matter is that Texas is NOT California and it's as simple as that.

Most less desirable things inherently are less expensive. It's not much different in this case with the DFW area vs. San Diego area.

The fact of the matter is that San Diego (and especially the neighborhoods you are looking at) are some of the best and most desirable neighborhoods in all of the United States not just California. And that is not going to be cheap. I'd look at it that way.

As Sschibuola noted, yes at the end of the day you can probably die with a higher net worth living in Texas vs. California but that isn't the goal of many people. However, I think the real test is to just make sure you can comfortably afford San Diego. If so, I don't see any reason not to live here.

Depends on what kind of house you choose, and what you consider 'good income'. But, just so you know, 90% of people who visit Dan Diego "fall in love" with it and feel it 'calling them' (and 95% say the same about Hawaii). That's why it costs 2-3 times as much to buy a home there than most of the rest of the country. I lived in Sand Diego for many years and loved it, but it was a much different place back then. I still have family there and visit often though. It's a nice place to visit…

The problem most people have when they move to any place is that they expect it to be the place they left with better (choose your attribute).

You can't do that. You've got to be willing to accept a place for what it is, and work within that. If you do that, you'll be fine. If you expect it to be like the place you left, you're in trouble.

There is an inherent benefit of being able to leave your house everyday of the year, being able to dip your toes in the Pacific on Christmas day, and the overall well being of a less than stressful life. We do not have the financial opportunities of Manhattan nor do we have the affordability of Texas...but if you can get past the money and realize that San Diego is as close to perfection on the geographical scale as possible, you may live out your remaining years in a happy daze.

At the end of the day, if you drove in a new Mercedes or a 1976 Ford Fiesta POS, you are still at the beach on Christmas and not shoveling snow.

Trust me procapital...once you move here.....your friends and relatives that think you are "crazy" will be visiting you. You better buy a house with a spare bedroom as the visitors will come. LOL. We have a steady stream of family and friends that have come here and used our guest bedroom.

I'm sure they won't think you are so crazy as to not use your guest bedroom.
