It doesn't solve the heat issue, and it's in the opposite direction as SD, but would Yuma, AZ be a better option in which to live? The commute, although not short, looks a lot easier than Alpine, CA.

Hi! Can you weigh in on how awful a commute from Alpine to Boulevard would be? Would it actually be 35 mins like google maps says or would traffic we awful? I'm going to be moving to the area end of this year and am trying to figure out where to live (job in Boulevard) but I don't want to live in a small small-town with not much going on. Any advice would be appreciated so much!!! Thank you.

Its an old thread, but an RV travel trailer would be useful in the OP's scenario. Plenty of room in the desert to park it and avoid the drive at least a few days a week.

My family lives in Jamul and hits the 8 at Japatul Valley (just east of Viejas). They frequently go east from there, and traffic is light. There may be delays westbound at the Border Patrol checkpoint in Buckman Springs, but you can always take Old Hwy. 80 as an alternate. High winds are a more common occurrence.

I "did" 2 years in "El Stinko" when I was 3-4 years old. For all I knew, the whole world was 125F, so it didn't bother me. Now, that I know better, I'll only ride thru on a motorcycle, to cruise Hwy 86 towards Palm Springs, in the Winter. Summertime there, is a great big NOPE!
Side note~ Interstate 8, going from the mountains to the desert floor, is an exercise in terror with cross winds on a single track vehicle. (Scary with an empty 53' trailer too.)

When you see "catch fences" along an interstate, you KNOW they get used...

Years and years ago, I did east San Marcos to Calexico/Mexicali for a few months on a project. The added benefit was it was from late spring all the way into those 125f summer days. Lot's of time to bask in that rich sticky agricultural smell and stifling heat. Crossing the border every day was the icing on the cake. The commute was the least of my concerns to be honest.
