It takes me about 10 minutes to get to Encinitas. Any differences between the two cities are pretty minimal in my opinion. While I do notice the differences when I'm downtown in either place, Carlsbad is more ....not conservative really just more all ages family type place though with a nice selection of things to do, downtown area is nice and nice beaches, etc. Encinitas is a little more young and hippieish..but again these are like siblings from the same family, not different countries...know what I mean? And the apartment complexes are on the other side of I-5, you have to drive anyway to get downtown so take your pick where you want to go....Downtown Cbad or Downtown Encinitas.

I mean look at a map....they are literally a few miles apart, I'm practically in Encinitas when I go to the grocery store.

I'm from an area though, where a few miles doesn't change much. All in all I think I prefer Carlsbad though in that it feels like a more professional crowd in that, they don't really care if I'm a hippie or working 9-5 as long as I don't cause trouble...its diverse and people are form all over. Same with Eninitas really except I feel like in areas like Encinitas there is actually more pressure to be a certain 'type' of person? I really don't know.

Again I think it doesn't matter too much, but that's me. I'd prefer to live closer in to downtown (either place, cause I like to walk to coffee, lunch, etc.) but didn't find the right place when it was time to move.

This place had all of what I needed and in a year I might find something else once I know the area better and options. I looked quite a bit though (I needed quiet and extra space for home office, too) and I like the amenities a lot, and in general my neighbors are pretty mature and good. nice gym. They made it an easy choice and an easy move for me and that is important when you are coming from a distance and are not comfortable laying down $2000 and first months rent on some private place with no professional management.

My last place was like that (in Ventura) and I'm about a million times happier even though I'm paying more rent.

I will definitely look into Carlsbad then. Great information....and probably better coming from a non local's perspective.

ps. I haven't been to the Coaster Station yet -- I don't commute for work but will be doing some travelling around town for work in the coming months and will probably be getting to know the Coaster. I think the station is only a mile or two away, there are 2 in Carlsbad.

oh....and with your budget -- I would just suggest always looking for a top floor corner unit. I did that and it was a great choice. I have view as well. My office overlooks the nature preserve and I can see the ocean from my balcony. I also got a garage which is great for, well parking but also a little extra storage.

I wouldn't move into most of these places if all I could afford was a one bedroom in a high traffic spot with noisy neighbors (and the walls are kinda flimsy so noise does travel).

I also checked out the Seagate Condos in Carlsbad but they didn't have the unit I wanted (loft). It has great reviews, good management and is in the same price range. Seems to be a great place.

Pacific View didn't have great ratings but I took it with a grain of salt considering Irvine Company took it over only a month or so before I moved in and has a better reputation than Archestone for customer service.
