So I've been going downtown a LOT more than usual lately for work meetings. I typically just park in a lot vs. parking meters but when I park at the meters I watch the clock closely as to not get a parking ticket as I know they are about $45. (I've gotten a few in Del Mar).

So I get the mail yesterday and there is a parking ticket letter in it saying I never paid my expired meter ticket from January 28. The problem is that I never had a ticket on my windshield! The letter went on to mention if I didn't pay by February 20 then the fine would go up to $78. Well, yesterday was already the 24th of February so it already escalated up to $75.

I called today to explain that I would pay the original $45 but that there is NO way that I'd even have known I got the ticket. I told the woman I put in enough money until 3:30 PM. Well the ticket time said 3:32 PM. I literally had a meeting across the street and there wasn't a ticket on the car.

She told me it didn't matter and that it's not their problem on the slow US mail or lost mail. She did acknowledge that there are people that for whatever reason pull tickets off the cars. (She said she has heard reports of that many times).

I finally got her to waive the late charge (she said they will never do that again and she is only doing that because I've never gotten a ticket in the City of San Diego before).

But I'm curious...has this happened to anyone else where someone has taken the ticket off your windshield?

I have to be honest ER, the sinister side of me has always been tempted to do that as a passer by, but I never actuallly have followed through on the thought.

Its something I imagine Bart Simpson would do as he passes by on his skateboard and then chuckle afterwards.

There are a lot of people that think it's funny to take tickets off of windshields. Also, some of the meter people get overzealous, and will write tickets before the meters actually expire. The reason being is because they figure most people won't pay attention to the time, and will just pay it.

Ha, ha. You know, I do believe it happens quite a bit by what this customer service representative said on the phone. She said that lots of people complain about it but she didn't know if they were just making it up. But I can promise you that there was no ticket on my windshield at all.

Yep. I guess that must be it. I do think that this might have been the case with the meter maid. I didn't see them at all when I came out and literally I ended the meeting as I knew that it would expire soon. Unless they are just sitting there waiting for it to expire. I've had the same thing happen in Del Mar before where I got a ticket where literally it had to be 2 or 3 minutes.

Oh well... doesn't seem like anything you can do if this happens and someone pulls your ticket off your windshield. Also, the letter said that it was written February 6 but I didn't get it until yesterday. I guess it also benefits them to send these payment letters late after the date they say it's due. Doesn't seem like anything you can do and not sure how beneficial appealing would be.
