The City is planning to establish an on-the-street bicycle rental system very soon, but maybe not in time for your visit.

Unless you're planning to see only things within a couple of miles of where you're staying, you'll need a car. I haven't had a car for a few years, and it just takes too long to get anywhere by bus/trolley only. MTS has been doing what they can to improve bus travel times (they did a great job on making the #44 bus faster over the past few years), but it will still take you at least an hour to an hour and a half to go more than 5 miles. Longer times on weekends. And there are areas where buses just don't go.

Plus, if you want to do/see more than one place in one day, the bus connections will eat up most of your time. The trolley is faster but doesn't serve a lot of the county, remember.

I've been living on/near streets with major bus routes, too, so even if you stay somewhere where you can catch a lot of buses, you'll still face long ride times to get to most places.

This is a great idea for SD. It's been working fairly well in NYC but with the program has come a huge increase in citations/tickets given out to riders. It's a huge money maker for the city.

Hopefully is won't go this direction in SD.

It'll be great for some parts of San Diego. But we have a lot of canyons that break up the city. We're not flat, like NYC or Chicago.

Take the #2 bus to transverse downtown through the fun, walkable neighborhoods of Golden Hill and SONO Heights (South Park, North Park, Normal Heights) the #11 gets you East and West while up there (University Heights, Normal Heights and I think out to Kensington. And the #7 gets you to the neighborhoods on the west side of the park from downtown- Bankers Hill, Hillcrest and Mission Hills - all, great walkable areas to explore on foot hoping on and off the bus when you like.
