I drove from VA to AZ with three cats. The Motel 6 chain is reasonable, allows pets, and doesn't charge a per pet fee like some others do. Best Western charges $10 per pet, per night, though.

We traveled across country with cats and Golden Retriever....LaQuintas are pet friendly and, surprisingly clean! No extra charge for pets.

I drove from SD to VA with 3 cats and stayed at La Quinta the whole way. No charge for pets, no hassles. They also have an easy cancellation policy (usually 6pm local time) so I had multiple hotels booked each day along the route so incase the the cats needed a break I could stop early.

We did the same...booked all along the way.
Also....rooms are set up so...for instance: cats can not hide underneath the bed. Every detail has been thought of...no hiding places for a cat when it is time to leave on the AM

Ha, Ha, well one of mine found their way under the bed in Tucson, there was a small entry area near the wall. I gave her half-an-hour before I moved the bed into the middle of the room and was able to coax her out.

One thing about La Quinta that I didn't like was that the majority of hotels had only 1 luggage cart so every time I checked in I would have to hunt it down. One time I had to follow the person who was using it to their room and wait for them to finish. I apologized for 'stalking' them but I wasn't going to let that thing out of my sight.

I didn't book along the way, because I didn't know where my next stop would be, and had no trouble finding a Motel 6. La Quinta's weren't in my budget, and the Motel 6's suited me just fine.

We drove from BK to Escondido with our 75-lb dog on the backseat of our rental car. I can share my blog which details our trip if you would like more info.
