Actually, this type of story epitomizes San Diego specifically to me and SO CAL in general: No actual history, just 'replicas' of 'cool or popular stuff that they are doing elsewhere'. It's all a veneer or facade, which is why, in 2014, they are lamenting poor location choice. LOL. Barcelona, Pike's Market...um, these places are REAL. They may have become touristy, but at one point they organically grew out of the communities in which they reside, for practical, day to day life reasons. SD is full of 'empty shells' of current trends, IMO. Not saying they cannot be 'nice' [isn't everything in SD 'nice'=what a bland, virtually sterile adjective anyway] to visit, but they are not substantive and rooted in history or community.

And then people lament that 'they couldn't get the funding'. These things are not *just* in need of funding. Endless cash flow still wouldn't make them float long term if they are not part of the fabric of their socio economic context. And speaking of that, I live in carmel valley and I don't even think most 'upper middle class families in CV' would even drive to del mar for a 'mercado'. No one cares. Or, plenty of other things to do, shop at costco or jimbo's, whole foods, etc anyway. It's not just money; it's a demographic interest. And demographics involve more than just income numbers.

I think Encinitas is a community that would be interested in sustaining a venue such as this, for example. At the same time, folks who are interested in this like a bit more substance and not just trendy, superficial image or flash. And by design, this mercado seems superficial by design. Well meaning, yes, but just not created with depth. And as mentioned, we already have plenty of farmer's markets-some more well done than others [again, everyone's cashing in on the FM trend at the moment. Kind of like art walks. And most of them s*ck, tbh].

I am not even familiar with this place. When I read the thread, I thought at first that maybe is was a mexican or south american market, which I thought was cool and maybe I'd check it out. I think an international themed market would possibly fly-but genuinely developed as a concept, not just fly-by-night throw up a few flags and sell some samosas and call it good. Crafts, products, food stalls, etc. would be viable, if they could distinguish it from all the international vendor stalls that sell at farmer's markets.

To me, it sounds like the idea itself was not developed fully as something commercially sustainable and was based more on the image or idea of something. Regardless of location, it sounds like it would have had a short shelf life or need to be modified. Although it has improved a bit, San Diego is still just not a place with a lot of community involvement. It really is mainly corporate development and, yes, some independent business growth. Mainly larger corporate (whether tourist or business enterprise) and government projects, though.

WRT Supernatural Sandwiches, which we were discussing earlier in this thread, I visited them today for lunch (my second visit) and this time I tried the Siren (locally caught white shrimp) which had been named "A signature sandwich of San Diego" by some local group. The sandwich really does deserve all the praise it has gotten. Everything was ultra fresh, locally grown, locally caught, heirloom & organic, etc... And the tastes really went well together while even the bun was artfully done. I highly recommend it.

Shhhh.........Stop saying this. Before you know it, the lines will be out the door and we won't be able to get a sandwich during lunch.
