After having lived nearly all our lives in L.A., my wife and I will soon be decamping to Escondido. We've picked out a place so that part of it is taken care of. The town looks fine from what we've seen; not terribly exciting in itself but in an interesting region with surprisingly better mass transit than my current neighborhood. I went to UCSD for undergrad so I do know a good deal about San Diego County and I'm happy to be moving back to the area.

But what should I know about things like city and county government, other than that it's generally more Republican-leaning than in L.A., and what should I be aware of in such matters as dealing with the local powers that be, and the utilities? I was shocked when the leasing agent told us her SDG&E bill averaged around $600 monthly, but she did say that her family were "high-tier" consumers. (I didn't ask, but I hope to god they live in a very large house and keep everything turned on all the time.) Our most recent electric bill was $93 for two months, and it seemed like we'd had the AC more often than not. While that's an unusually low amount, as anything under $100 would be, we've never come close to six bills a month. Is this a thing with SDG&E?

If Escondido has better mass transit than your current 'hood, you must reside in an antimatter quantum universe containing negative mass transit.

Yeah, that pretty much describes San Diego any farther out than the central areas.

OP, we're in a two-bedroom condo, and our SDG&E is typically around $60 per month. Yours in Escondido may be a bit higher in summer because you'll have warmer temps. A bill of $600 per month, even for a SFH, sounds outrageous to me - if I ever saw a bill that large I'd have SDG&E out immediately to investigate where all that usage is coming from!

I lived in San Diego for 5 years, I lived everywhere, I was 20-25 and wanted to experience everything: Downtown, La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Del Mar, Carmel Mountain (just south of Escondido), and Vista (just west of Escondido). Escondido gets EXTREMELY HOTT in the summers! My apartment was typically less than 1,000 sq ft and I was fairly conservative with my heat and A/C usage. Typical SDGE bill was $80-$200/mo in the Vista and Carmel Mountain areas- which is the closest climate to Escondido! $600 a month is outrageous- however common for a larger home in that area! Escondido is known for have multi family dwellings, so that can also increase the monthly utilities there!

May I ask why you chose Escondido? I'm not to familiar with the ins and outs of the area, however I was told by co workers to not go out at night there. There like many places in the world and scattered parts of L.A and San Diego have rough patches. I know there were gang affiliated incidents. Now, also stating there are some extremely beautiful homes and neighborhoods in Escondido. not all of it is bad! What area or street will you be living?

I'll try and help you out best I can!

If they were running AC constantly, the bill could be that high. We had those kind of bills in Texas with having to run the AC all the time. My 3000 sq ft, one story, runs about $ 300 a month, with no air, but a pool running. Full Solar System being installed as we speak!

She did say they have a koi pond and several large aquaria, among other things.

The mass transit doesn't look adequate in terms of getting around the immediately area, but I don't plan on using it for that purpose. What impresses me is the LRT route to Oceanside, and from there SD is in easy reach via Amtrak or Coaster. I do drive but I don't necessarily want to do that as my only option for , and I appreciate having getting around, at least to some places. I never did explore DTSD very much while I was at UCSD, so I'm looking forward to that, in addition to dome of the other beach towns.

Remember talking to a friend about his move to a single family home in Escondido several years ago. Said during his first summer there his electric bill was running $ 500.00 a month.

I live in central San Diego and my average year around electric and gas bill per month is in the $50.00 range.

Corrected/added bolded text.

From Escondido, the better option for a quicker trip to Downtown SD will be the I-15 Rapid Bus.

SANDAG :: PROJECTS :: San Diego's Regional Planning Agency

Scroll down to the Links at the bottom of the page and click on the I-15 Rapid Bus Service map. This route should be up and running in the next few months.
