Hi everyone, I just wanted to get your opinions about the SDSU campus. Would you consider it an urban area? Is there a lot to do in the area, off campus? Also how far is it from downtown San Diego?
Is there public transportation that can take you from SDSU to the downtown and the beach?

Thanks.

It's technically urban but it looks more like an overcrowded suburb. SDSU area and areas to the south are heavily populated, heavy traffic, but feels like any overused 1950's inner suburb in any big western city (i.e. LA or Phoenix)

Yes, there is a bus that will take you downtown, but you will have to take the trolley to Old Town and transfer to another bus to go to the beach. Downtown isn't within walking distance, though.

How long does it take to get to downtown?

I wish it was. :/

Okay, would you consider it to be a more Urban area than the border of Eastern LA County and San Bernardino County area?

If you are trying to compare it to CSULA and CSUSB then IMO it would be less urban than the former and more urban than the latter.

Denser than Claremont. Easier to catch public transportation. But still in the suburbs. It's not in downtown San Diego, or anywhere near the ocean. I went there for graduate school. It's off Interstate 8, pretty far inland, near La Mesa. Look on a map.

It certainly is more urban than Claremont, but it isn't as urban as say, LASU which others have said. It is a bit like CSUN, maybe not quite as urban. The immediate surrounding area is pretty much what you would expect from any large university. But to me, Claremont is more of a college town than east San Diego. I don't know if any of us have really helped you, it if a pretty hard question to answer. Urban, suburban and rural can mean different things to different people. It isn't a commuter school like CSUN, if that helps. There are a lot of locals that attend the school though.

The City just started a new express bus route from SDSU to Downtown. Don't know how long it takes but should be faster. There are also 2 trolley stops, one on campus and one across from Alvarado Medical Center immediately adjacent to the campus.
We live south of SDSU and it's a 20 minute drive out frwy 8 to the beach. If we take frwy 94 to downtown it's about a 10 minute drive and empties right out in downtown San Diego.
There are restaurants in the SDSU area. Not sure about night life. No movie theaters. You are more likely to find us heading west to North Park, South Park, Hillcrest, University Heights, Normal Heights, for dining etc. That said, there are many dining opportunities here, not much in the way of shopping. I know Bistro 60 has live music. I'm sure there are others I don't know about. Depends on your age and tastes as well.
