We will be in SD for ~10 days around Christmas and New Year's for our honeymoon. I have explored every "things to see/do" website but wanted to ask locals their suggestions for things that don't make the obvious lists. Non-chain restaurants of all kinds? Unique sites to see? Cool local bars? Etc?

Thanks in advance!

Walks: Sunset Cliffs, Torrey Pines State Park and Beach, Balboa Park, Cabrillo, La Jolla Shores walk north to tidal pools
Fine pricey Dining: Wine Vault (on India St), Bice (downtown); stay away from overpriced mediocrity of La Jolla
Taco Shacks: Bull Taco (Encinitas), Poppa Fresh Fish Co (barrio), Fresh MXN, local chain
other: Central Library, Chula Vista Nature Center,
Where are you visiting from?

There are no shortage of those. General rule of thumb: if it has bars on the windows, looks sort of grimy and the signs are in Spanish, it's good.

You could skip Fresh MXN then - not very authentic, and IMO not very nice.

Have drinks (dinner is $$$$$) at Mr. A's downtown and watch the airplanes zoom past you on their way to land.

Super-quick off the top of my head:

Food:
Cucina Urbana (walk in balboa park after/before)
Panama 66 (actually IN the park, so ditto, lots of local beer)
Great maple
Blue boheme
Burger lounge (local chain, yummy burgers)
Carnitas snack shack
Cafe Chloe
Underbelly (ramen, not super-authentic but OMG good. Excellent beer selection. Only place I've ever seen Hitachino on tap)
El Zarape taco shop (the one on park, not the one on Adams. Great chile relleno burrito)
Super Cocina (looks a little gritty but seriously an amazing food experience. You can try every single dish there before ordering, which is good since many are unique)

Local beers:
Thorn Street brewery
Hess brewery
Societe brewery
(Many, many more. These are just my faves)

Many beers, not local but excellent selections of microbrews of all types:
Tiger! Tiger!
Blind lady ale house (excellent pizza also)
Toronado
Fathom Bistro (on a fishing pier on the harbor, gorgeous view of downtown across the water, gtreat boat- and people-watching)
