Haha yeah, it's kind of the same thing. But the Little Italy Association did it more to be marketable than politically correct.

The Festa is really fun, by the way.

...so then more along the lines of Del Mar Fair changing the name to San Diego County Fair.

No it's not an important holiday anymore. When I was in elementary school in the late 90s to early 2000s (yes, I'm young) I learned that Columbus thought the world was flat and discovered America after coming across on one of three boats. Later on in high school and college I learned that Columbus was not the first person to discover America. There were people here already -- The Native Americans. In elementary school kids get a positive view of Columbus because telling the truth about the killing and destruction of the Natives is too graphic for kids. Many people of a certain political party don't like the more graphic version because "it makes people hate their own country". Every country has done horrible things and that includes America. Trying to mask it makes it worse.

Columbus is an Italian celebration, there are several states that do not celebrate Columbus Day, but recognize it as Indigenous Day instead.

I am very disturbed that you were taught that Columbus believed the world was flat. Your teachers could have at least gotten that part right before they loaded you up with the usual PC baggage.

FYI for those who attended the same schools as the OP, Columbus believed the world was round, as did most educated people. It's just that educated people weren't large in number.

I was thinking the same thing. I was never taught that Columbus believed the world was flat and I am talking about grade school in the 1950s. If he thought it was flat he would not have thought he could go west and arrive in Asia, which was his plan.
I was also not taught that there were no people in the western world. That said, the genocide that followed the European invasion was not addressed when I was a kid.
I also remember, at some point, being told about Leif Erickson and Viking peoples who were said to have come to the western world 500 years before Columbus.

Maybe I didn't learn that Columbus thought the World was flat. It might have been that people in his time thought that. I can't remember haha.
