Um, yeah. Even up here in boring bedroom-community, even in our second-story condo, we have "stops" put in so we can have our patio door open six inches ... but it'll get very noisy if someone tries to open it further. And we have "stops" on our double-hung windows so they can be opened an inch or so.

Late one night, shortly after I'd moved into here (in the '90s), there came a frantic knocking at our door. Followed shortly by the sheriff's 'copter announcement about hunting down someone in our neighborhood.

So, "open" but with safety measures.

Lived in the north part of Orange County for 15 years. Right next to a high school. House was always open when the weather was right and someone at home. Most of the time a mob scene. Windows, doors etc. So was most of the neighborhood.

Never a problem.

Was a long cul-de-sac. Unknown cars were subject to instant scrutiny. Couple of houses over was Cop central. Had a cop car out front or in the drive way 2 or 3 hours a day.

Some interesting responses here. I only lock the doors and windows when going to bed and leaving the house. Whenever someone is home, the doors and windows are always open.

One thing I've noticed are those without A.C getting by with leaving doors and windows open. This is a new concept to me as I can't imagine living anywhere where this is safe. Do you have small windows? Do you close them at night? Do you install motion sensors on the screens?

Sorry if this is a lame question but I'm baffled.

SD is not that safe. Few, if any, places are throughout The US. Don't be foolish. Get a apt./house with AC or purchase ceiling or floor fans, and lock your doors and windows. Especially if you have children.

My neighbor leaves his door wide open whenever he is home. This would not be a big deal, except that he walks around nearly naked most of the time and is really overweight. My door faces directly into his, so it's terribly awkward.
