Hi
My family and I are moving to your area next summer and I have been reading this forum a lot trying to learn. One thing I've noticed are those without A.C getting by with leaving doors and windows open. This is a new concept to me as I can't imagine living anywhere where this is safe. Do you have small windows? Do you close them at night? Do you install motion sensors on the screens?

Sorry if this is a lame question but I'm baffled.

Angela

I do this, but I live in a safe cul-de-sac where even a shout at night will bring out the whole neighborhood. I also usually have a fan in the window, and stuff around, that would be difficult to move without making quite a bit of noise.

If you're worried about safety, you could install window bars. That's going to work better than glass, anyway. The only thing glass will do is possibly wake you up if it's broken. You could probably get the same effect with some twine and bells or other jury-rigged system.

I think a lot of houses in CA are oriented to the backyard, and most people have fenced yards and security screen doors on the front yard. I lock the house up when I go to bed and when I leave, but otherwise it's pretty wide open to soak up that breeze!

I do this too, but my drive way is pretty long so my home is away from the street and property is gated/fenced off surrounded by other fenced lots. I leave my french doors wide open in the evening and day time on cool and warm days only to close the windows and doors on hot and cold days. Sometimes a cricket or two might come or a moth but bugs are not a big problem, much less safety.

It all depends on where you live or how your house is situated that will dictate whether it is safe to do or not.

Angela,
Most folks have abdicated their protection to Police over the past several decades. Call 911 and wait for the police right? Great idea.

Wac_432. I hadn't thought about some sort of noise maker! I'm glad you have neighbors who care. Most places I've lived if you hear screams you call the police or mind your own. I'm glad that isn't the case everywhere.

Sassberto. That's interesting, the houses being oriented to the back and fenced. Something for me to consider when looking for a home.

My house is locked up when we are away.
Windows open when we are home....gated driveway, alarm system, dog and " added protection" should anyone decide to enter my home uninvited.

Malcorub16. Bugs aren't a big problem?! How fortunate! I can't wait for that non-problem.

GL2. My cousin is a officer in Macon Georgia. He walked into my house one time unannounced and gave me the butt chewing of my life for leaving my door unlocked.
