I've been offered a position with the US Navy near Coronado Island. We are currently living in Louisville, KY and although this new position is a "raise" I'm concerned that the cost of living in San Diego vs. Louisville, KY is going to be detrimental to my family of 5. My husband works in the casino industry so we are hopeful that he can find a job in the area but main concern is this: can we find a decent, safe and sanitary 3BR residence for $1200 in or around Coronado Island?? Is the increased housing price the only San Diego cost of living we need to be focussed on? Please advise and thanks!

these threads crack me up. do a little reading and you should be able to answer your own questions. you'll need about 3-4 times that monthly rental budget to live on Coronado

Not only will you not be able to find it on Coronado, you will be hard pressed to find much of anything in the price range in a safe and secure area. Cost of living across the board is higher than in Kentucky. Here is cost of living calculator, that may be helpful. Good luck!

There is no way you'll be able to find a 3 bedroom for $1,200 in Coronado. A quick craigslist, zillow, trulia search would make that clear.

I have a luxury one bedroom in another part of town (not as high end as Coronado) and its on the low end for $1,800. A 2 bedroom was $2,300 and that was a couple of years back.

You'd be better off looking for something out near the Casinos but then, you'd be the one commuting.

I suggest staying in Louisville, you'll be better off.

I have often wondered if CD intentionally writes these troll-like, yet polite posts, in an attempt to hit as many hotbutton points as possible. It would be their way of inciting commentor fury, and increasing clicks, a digital way of chumming the water for sharks.

But to answer your question, even if you stated, "can we find a grimy, dangerous and dirty 3BR residence for $1200 in or around the most ghetto and shady area of the city? Random gunshots, Police helicopters and sirens at night are a plus and bars on the windows would go perfect with my living room set.", you STILL could not find anything.

What you are looking for (barring the exceedingly rare diamond in the rough) does not exist in San Diego, let alone around Coronado, one of the most expensive parts of this real-estate expensive city. A simple search of the Housing section on Craigslist using the keyword "Coronado" and your parameters of 3-bedroom minimum, would show you all you need to know. And if you do look there, beware of the places that "prove me wrong", because there is a very good chance they are scams.

Barrio Logan is perhaps the "closest to Coronado" which would also be closest to your pricepoint, however, I don't know if that's what you are looking for. I suggest what another poster said and move here for 1 or 2 months in a decent area and do a lot of observing and driving around on your own. But before you do so, be very aware of what San Diego is like cost-wise compared to Kentucky.

Also, read some of the forums here from Page 1 to Last Page and really begin to get an understanding of what is needed to live in SD, especially with a family to think about.

Here you go...this 3 bed/1 bath residence is only $345 dollars over your budget but you can get to Coronado Island in 5 minutes.
