I will be traveling with family tomorrow from the west side of Phoenix to Oceanside. Google Maps shows that the shortest route, time wise, is the 8 west to the 805 north to 5 north. However, the shortest distance, mileage wise, is the 10 west to Beaumont, south on local roads through San Jacinto, Hemet, and Winchester and then meeting up with the 15 south in Temecula and then Hwy 76 west into Oceanside. Does anyone who is familiar with either route have recommendations? We've done the 8/805/5 route before and it was fine. We didn't experience any major traffic delays, really. Does anyone have recommendations for which route to take?

Driving through Hemet is generally a PITA. Lots of stop lights and lots of local traffic. I don't expect major traffic tomorrow, but there are still the stoplights. I'd stick with 8/805/5.

Thanks a lot! I don't do too well with an abundance of lights when I am traveling long distance. It does get extremely irritating after a while.

whenever there's a choice that involves avoiding the I-10, that's the choice you should make

The 8 route is a nice one, I drive it a couple times of year to Tucson.

I drove from Scottsdale to San Diego a few months ago via I-8, and it was a breeze. It was a bit on the desolate side, but it was fast and uneventful.

Possibly too late by now for the OP, but we do take the Ii-10 from Phoenix and then the 85 to Gila Bend where we pick up I-8. It's a bit out-of-the-way to get to I-8 directly from Phoenix.

Yeah I assumed OP meant for majority of the ride. I roll to Tucson a couple of times a year, and I am aware that you have to take the 10 a little bit at the end to get to either city.
