Any pointers for someone who's looking to rent a loft in San Diego, in terms of neighborhoods or specific locations? I'm looking for a basic loft in the range of $1600-2000 with a factory vibe (brick walls, authentic-looking).

As for neighborhoods, I'm not interested in nightlife and I'm more into art, museums, libraries, coffee shops. A good walking area with a park nearby would be great, and I'm not interested in anything too central or close to the beach. Any ideas?

Good neighborhood suggestions but your price point is unrealistic. In those neighborhoods, $1600 - 2000 will get you a pretty basic apartment and certainly not an upscale loft. Double it and you'll have options.

There used to be, in some of the older buildings downtown. I had a bunch of friends that lived in them in the 80s-90s before the redevelopment really got into full swing, a lot of them in the area where the ballpark is now. I'm pretty sure at least a couple of the older loft buildings still exist (I went to an antique sale in one just East of the old library a couple of years ago) but they're few and far between now.

The first place I thought of after reading your post were the Structure Lofts in Bankers Hill. It's an office building that was converted into lofts that look pretty cool. Lots on concrete if you are ok with that. Only thing is they start at about $2,500 (Pricing sheet in link), but it's close to Balboa Park.

Downtown is where you will find more traditional style lofts. My friend lived in the Simon Levi building before the adjacent Ballpark was built. Here's a link to the leasing office for several properties. You can find something for as little as $1500 a month but don't expect it to be too glamorous.

Good luck in your search
