I'd recommend living on campus, especially your first year, if you can. UCSD is quite spread out, you can't park unless you're willing to pay heaps, and you'll probably want to stay close to all the free amenities that come with staying on campus, like the gym and libraries.

It's a little quiet, I guess, but I find living in the beach areas to be a little too distracting to get any work done.

Yeah, wives are expensive, pretend ones too. Stongly recommend PB for the fun and the beach. Not that many yuppies there. Since you have a car, you can try UTC, which is a general good central location to get to many places and lots of condos.

Maybe La Jolla Shores if you can afford it. UCSD is right up the street, the surfing is fantastic, and the scenery is some of the best in California. It has a wealthy older population though.
