Hi all,

I'm from Chicago originally and currently Wilmington, NC. Ive traveled to San Diego 3 times now and each time didn't want to leave. This last trip has convinced me to try a move here. I'll either rent something or buy something right. My question is whether the Point Loma area, specifically a few blocks east of Point Loma park. It's far enough away from the jet noise. But is traffic very bad getting in and out of PL? I'm a single 34 year old very active/outdoors type guy. Not interested in PB, especially by all the college kids. I work from home so commute is not an issue. Curious on your thoughts.

Also on a totally separate topic - do most of you carry earthquake insurance? Or not really needed?

Thanks!

I work from home - so I won't be needing to commute anywhere to work, but still will be driving around for various things.

I have a friend that lives on Point Loma, and she has commented on the traffic being bad at times. But, if you are working from home it would be easier to adjust when you go out vs. traffic patterns. She has also commented on the planes being loud during the marine layer hours, and in the occasion of flight pattern changes at the airport during fog. I suppose it depends which part of Point Loma you are on, though.

There has been mention about earthquake and hazard insurance here. If you search it out here on City Data the threads may pop up.

When are you moving?

Thank you very much. I looked at a few properties in PL, some around liberty station and the plane noise was terrible...every 2 minutes. Couldn't believe those were still going for $1M+. This area of PL I didn't hear the planes. But was told by a realtor the military jets could fly over this area though. Traffic, demographics (other singles/families etc) are my main concerns with PL. Are there young professionals here, or mostly families or a good mix? I am planning on making the move late summer time with several more trips planned looking for places and exploring.

Point Loma And air plane noise go hand and hand. honestly you get use to it!
The Traffic in the morning commute getting out point Loma can be bad but bearable
I have not met one person that has earthquake insurance here in San Diego

The military jets fly all around the coastal areas. They are loud and fast vs. commercial jet noise that is loud and long. Many areas of San Diego county have some kind of air noise at some point.

If you post budget and what you want to be near, you may get better feedback. There are a lot of people that want to move here that have a budget that is not realistic to the areas they want to live in. I am not saying that you are one of these people, but some people will hold back answering threads until more info is known. Most people post that they are active and outdoorsy, but if you are a hiker vs. a surfer, there may be better places to live than at the beach. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks. I live at the ocean now on the other side of the country - I don't surf, but love the relaxed way of life, and in the case of San Diego the weather that goes along with it. I do love walking, hiking, riding bikes, jogging, boating, etc. I'd like to be close to bike paths, walking paths near water, shopping like trader joes, close to good restaurants, and big stores like home depot. I am planning to spend about 1.5M on a renovated house. I don't have any kids yet, or even a wife. Maybe will meet one there
