Hi all,

We (husband, wife and 2 kids) are planning to move to San Diego, CA, in July 2015 from Atlanta, GA. The school I will be going to is located near downtown San Diego( zip code 92101). We would like to stay as close to the school as possible. What are some nice and safe neighborhoods close to or not so far from that school. 2 bed with 1 bath apartment will be enough for us. Monthly rent of $1600 or less is preferable. Good neighborhoods and good public schools are also important for me. One of the kids is in 6th grade and the other one is in 4rd grade.

Please give me some good neighborhood zip codes, so I can keep looking for an apartment. It seems to me, finding an apartment is a bid issue in San Diego unlike in Atlanta.

Any advice will be helpful and greatly appreciated.

Thank you all.

$1600 2 bedroom, nice/safe area, good schools, near downtown?

Do you know anything about San Diego? Have you ever been here?

Also, please clarify "as close as possible"? Do you want a short commute by car (under 20mins), transit, or walking distance?

I have never been there. 20/30 minutes commute by car will be fine. However, I don't want to live somewhere that can be about an hour drive from downtown San Diego. I called some apartment places that are about 10/15 miles away from downtown, and their monthly rent is about $1600 or less, but I don't know anything about the neighborhood like how safe it is. Besides, none of apartment guys could tell me whether an apartment will be available in July since it is beyond 30 days.

What were the addresses of the apt. Complexes you called? I would love to see the 2 bedroom for $1600! It is most likely a come on ad to get you in....to add to it all, apts are in very high demand all over the San Diego area.

I found many in Zillow.com, trulia.com although I don't trust them that much. Why don't you give me an idea about the rent and some places 10/20 miles away from downtown, so I can start looking for one? If I don't find a decent one, then I will leave my family in Atlanta and choose the University housing for myself.

Thank you.

We are all willing to check out individual addresses or give you an opinion on the area....but I doubt if anyone will apt hunt for you. 10-20 mile radius of Downtown covers a lot of territory.

I would highly recommend you to visit San Diego first (as you never been here and don't have much info), at least for a week to get some feelings and know more about San Diego and rental scene. For a family of 4, you would at least need $2000-$2300 monthly budget for a rental if you want to live in a decent 2/2 apartment. Don't believe everything you see on Craiglist.
