I think you need to separate officers from enlisted personnel. Officers tend to vote conservative (More white, draw higher incomes) whereas enlisted personnel--as you correctly identified composed of more minorities--less conservative than many think.

I think it's hilarious anyone can equate the military to being conservative. That is so ignorant it is mind boggling.

I this case, God bless my local US postal delivery-lady, without her my ebay packages would never make it to me.

Oh absolutely, and that just reiterates what I was saying about wealth/poverty. We have pristine areas of military housing in San Diego that seems to be of higher ranking and it is also very diverse. One thing I won't do is try and label the military for anything it isn't as that would be extremely ignorant. The military doesn't start wars. Politicians do. Blaming the military for ones own bad decisions in life is a rather odd approach favorable by an ignorant few. Complaining about it in a military town reminds me of those that move in next to airports. But, even those people aren't fond of bringing a racial component into the argument.

Likes:
- Proximity to Mexico
- Clean, safe downtown with actually quite a lot going on
- The weather
- Proximity to the mountain towns, desert
- Proximity to Greater Los Angeles
- Some neighborhoods, e.g., La Jolla, North Park, Hillcrest
- Good tacos
- Microbreweries
- Great places for hiking abound
- Pure Burger, an awesome burger joint in Carlsbad
- Old Highway 101 in North County
- Traffic flows better than in other California cities
- Beaches in La Jolla through North County
- Its political purple-ness. It isn't Mississippi, nor is it San Francisco.

Dislikes:
- Not the bang for the buck that I can find in much of L.A., OC, and the Bay Area's East Bay (not to be confused with SF and Silicon Valley), IMHO
- Beyond some really cool neighborhoods, SD has a sort of bland, Midwestern-ish vibe
- People are not as friendly as they are up in L.A. or, for that matter, OC.
- I've witnessed more road rage here than I ever did living in L.A., OC, or the Bay.
- Too much Midwestern influence (already said it, buuuut...)
- Wages are far more depressed here than in...yep, you guessed it, L.A., OC, and the Bay. It's called that "sunshine tax."
- Certain beach communities, e.g., Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, Imperial Beach, have more than their share of trashy visitors.

Yes, San Diego has a lot to like... But it's hard for me to warm up to this place.

On the bang-for-the-buck thing, I'm not sure I agree that OC and LA are cheaper for what you get. In fact, I'd say they are higher. I mean, the only thing I can see here is that there might be a greater variety of housing option especially in LA

Also curious what "bang for the buck" they're finding in the East Bay. Considering proximity to the coast and/or downtown/central city I think SD def offers better prices than LA or the Bay Area overall.
