We just moved to San Diego from the midwest and it's been interesting to learn about the local flora. We have a few plants in our back yard with extremely long sword shaped leaves and the flower below. I feel like it ought to be related to the Bird of Paradise. It's probably something obvious but I can't identify it. Can anyone help? Thx!

That would be the classic orange Bird of Paradise; this plant is different - the flower does not open up any wider than the picture.

If you haven't already seen this site, you might want to try going through and seeing if the plant is listed here:

Thanks Jehjeh, I have been on that site and looked at just about everything that sounded vaguely close. It's where I identified another plant in our new yard, the Japanese Aralia. At least the mystery plant isn't something obvious! Maybe I'll email a picture to Walter Anderson; we discovered that nursery last month and love it.

Definitely not Bird of Paradise. It's New Zealand flax.

I agree based on what little is visible in the pic. Showing the leaves would make the ID certain.

That's it! Upright leaves. Thanks! We've got about all the plants id'd; now on to the palms. It's a beautifully landscaped yard around the pool. Our only issue is that we can't seem to grow tomatoes (we're one mile from the ocean; apparently that's part of the issue). And one of the four snapdragons we bought is doing beautifully, the rest died. It will take a while to figure out San Diego gardening!

I think you've got it! I've never seen one of those. I should have asked for a picture of the rest of the plant.
