I grew up and lived in Palm Springs for many years. And, believe it or not, it can rain there! And sometimes it rains in November. In fact we had huge flooding there back in the late 60s due to floods washing bridges and roads out. Tourists were not happy. But we needed rain now and then or the town would dry up and blow away! It was winter after all, even in Palm Springs. With an El Nino predicted, it is difficult to guess. Of course, we also had many a Thanksgiving with temps in the mid 80s as well. It is always a gamble to travel in winter no matter where you go.

A related anecdote. This was November 1983. We had a field camp scheduled (to do some mapping in the Mecca Hills). So on out we go on the 10, Friday late afternoon. Set up camp in at dusk - in a wash (you probably know where this story is going .... ).

The camp organizer, really great guy actually, had done several camps there over a period of 20 or so years. Famous last words ... storms never make it this far, they always wimp out somewhere around Banning. So, we're drifting off, on that nice soft sand ... pit ... pat ... pit, pat ... pittiiiitttitpat ... within about 10 minutes, pouring.

So much fun, breaking camp in a downpour! (NOT!). The water was rising to the hubs of our 4Xs as we high tailed it out of there!

Lucky you had warning!! Sometimes rain up higher can send the flashfloods down when there is no rain in the desert. Really dangerous. Haha, storms always wimp out in Banning!
