Looking at a lot of areas trying to avoid making a trip in vain,
What areas are known for bad air around San Diego is Central Valley a place where it all collects?

Fallbrook,Central Valley or Alpine?

alpine is up in the mountains there is not really any smog there i dont think.

Check out the air pollution maps from airnow.com. You'll see the that Alpines air quality is horrendous. I think it has to do with the wind blowing inland carrying all the smog and trapping it in the inland valley.

oh yeah, Alpine for sure...and you can see it in El Cajon (spanish for the box) which is adjacent to Alpine...west of.... when you drive in from La Mesa.

I am not familiar with "central valley"...for some reason I think that is LA.

While Alpine is a beautiful area, it does suffer from some of the worst air quality in the County on smoggy days. The elevation is what kills it. It's sits at about 2,000 feet and that's where the inversion layer stays and traps the smog below.

Luckily, stricter laws have resulted in less smoggy days than in the years past.

I always understood the Central Valley to be the San Joaquin Valley...Fresno. At least, that's what they called it in Madera (about 15 miles south of Fresno).

yep! el cajon is pretty much the armpit of san diego county when it comes to smog! el cajon is land locked by mountains and off shore breezes blow smog from the city of san diego to the east and it gets trapped in el cajon!
