I live right near it and I'm too intimidated to try hiking up it!

Just do it. Bring water. If you don't make it all the way up-no big deal. Try it the following weeks and make it up a little bit further each time.

Yeah, that's the thing. Its pretty much always crowded. There is a way to go up the backside that is less crowded but I suggest sticking to the front side by the golf course. Look at it this way, if you go down and twist an ankle someone will find you and help you. Better to be out there with everyone than on your own if you don't feel confident of your ability.

It's a quick 3 mile hike with some elevation gain that I can do most days after work. And all you have to do is go up any other way besides the main trail to avoid the crowds. I've been doing it for 40 years, and I plan to be doing it for 40 more.

I hike all over the county (and beyond!), but when I only have an hour and would much rather spend it outside then in the gym, Cowles is the way to go.

It's not like the back side is completely deserted. If you hurt yourself somebody will come across you pretty quickly. I mean, it's way way way less crowded, but I still pass four or five people on the way up the back trail.

As others have already said, Cowles is always crowded because not only is it easy to get to, there are restrooms at the trailhead. Good for a quick workout. Two less crowded trails that I like are Kwaay Paay and South Fortuna. South Fortuna has about 350 steps and Kwaay Paay will get your heart pumping.

Yup. I always correct people when they say it incorrectly.

I remember when I first moved to SD, all the 'locals' were telling me to pronounce it as 'Cowls', not 'Coals'. Today, I guess I know now I was right! Take that locals!

I kid
