Hi y'all. I recently moved to the Rancho Peñasquitos area. I love to run with my dog so I am searching for some off leash trails. I have been to the Los Peñasquitos Canyon but it's not off leash. Anyone know of any other areas? Thanks.

AFAIK there aren't any "off-leash" trails in the county. Is there some reason you can't run with your dog on a leash?

There is no reason why I can't keep my dog on a leash except it's much more pleasant for both of us if she can run and explore and I don't have to keep a hold of her. I guess we're both spoiled coming from an area with some great off leash areas for both dogs and runners.

Thanks for replying. Can you be more specific? I just moved to this area last week and I am still learning about the area. Thanks.

Bureau of Land Management

Unfortunately, most require some driving. You could, in theory, run inside the dog park section on Fiesta Island.

Gotcha. Not meaning to start an argument, but I do feel like I need to say that as an avid hiker and heavy user of trails all over the county, I actually really appreciate it when people keep their dogs leashed. The natural habitat around here is fragile, and not everyone enjoys coming around a bend to an uncontrolled dog (however friendly). I had a huge german shepherd almost literally scare the **** out of me when I was hiking in the mountains a few weeks ago- he was sweet as heck and we ended up being buds, but he was chasing a chipmunk down the trail and seeing a large animal coming at me through the trees in an isolated area like that was not an experience I'd care to repeat. Again, not trying to start an argument, just offering a perspective from another point of view

That said, Taxy is right about BLM lands (I had forgotten about that), although you do have to work a little to get to them, There are some really good trails out there albeit isolated ones. As for Fiesta Island, I wouldn't want to run through the dog park section, but I think the whole island *might* be a leash free area, so that might be something to look at. I hope you find what you're looking for!

Me too. Which doesn't happen even on the beach where signs are present.

There's a secret dog park near the Hitachi building in Scripps Ranch. Google it.
