I'll be visiting southern California this Christmas. I have made the trip from SD to LA before using Amtrak. It's generally been a quite pleasant journey.

My question is if Amtrak is the best and most cost effective way to make the one-way trip?

My parents can take me to the train station in Solana Beach, and I probably have a ride when I get to LA as well. I'll be flying home out of LAX.

Probably the best inexpensive choice. My mother used to ride it a lot to visit relatives as she could not drive due to eye issues. I would recommend a "sleeper" if within your budget.

If your destination is LAX, taking the Amtrak is very inefficient in terms of time (but I just saw you have a ride...). Amtrak will drop you off at Union Station. From there, you could take an airport bus to LAX (an hour). There are other options other than a bus once at Union Station, but they are expensive or time consuming. A lot depends on time of day and how much luggage you have. Save yourself grief and take an airport shuttle directly to LAX. PrimeTime shuttle. (I use this often and they are reasonable.)

Union station is fine. I'm planning to go to LA a day or two before my flight.

Thanks to all those who've answered!

Even if you were going to LAX....wouldn't Union Station to the Blue Line south to the Green Line to Redondo Beach be a way to get there mostly by rail? Not sure but Amtrak every single time from SD to LA. Then when you get there, despite the stereotypes, LA Metro rail pretty much has you covered now that that Expo line goes to SaMo and the Gold line goes past Azusa. No reason to spend more than $10 on an Uber in LA now.
