I'm in La Mesa next to Lake Murray. What would be a good place to check it out that's like no more than 20 minutes from me? I'd like to see it but I'm not interested enough to drive more than 20 minutes. I thought about doing it at the lake but it will be around 2AM and I would be alone. TY

Drive 20 minutes East and see where you end up. Find a place to park away from lights, sit on the hood of your car, and watch the sky. Seriously. Heading East away from the light pollution of the city is the only way to do it, and ideally you'd want to drive more like an hour to the local mountains, but since you're not interested in driving more than 20 minutes this is the best advice I can give you.

Horsethief Canyon trailhead in Alpine. Horsethief Canyon Trail - California | AllTrails.com

No hiking required. Just park in the parking lot, and look up. It's even dog friendly.

Closed at night. Although I suppose you could go to Iron Mountain. But I'd favor driving due east to get further away from the city light pollution instead of wasting those 20 minutes of driving going North on the 67 and staying closer to civilization
