They are one of 17 schools looking to be one of two schools added to the Big 12 conference.

Personally, I don't understand why the Big 12 wouldn't want them, in terms of the two major revenue sports.

The question for you guys: should San Diego State want to go to the Big 12?

Both Colorado State, Boise State, and New Mexico are trying to get in, so the Mountain West could be hurt if they didn't go in, but if they do join, they'd have to go as far away as West Virginia for games.

The Big 12 should and probably will take SDSU.
I see SDSU Football going 11-1 this year and getting a major Bowl Bid, But they are not only taking SDSU for Football. The basketball team has dominated the Western part of United States for about 5 years now. Gonzaga and most of the teams from the Pac 12(except for Arizona) won't play even play us.
The most beautiful thing Ive seen my life time was, watching the SDSU Basketball team beat UCLA's Basketball team on their own Floor at Pauley Pavilion.

The 'list of 17' is a list of schools that have expressed interest in joining the Big 12. Several on that list make no sense for the Big 12 and I am sure they will not be offered membership. I suspect Houston will be offered membership. Not sure which other team(s) will. Personally I find it odd that West Virginia is in the Big 12 instead of ACC but it is what it is.

I just can't see it. The Big XII doesn't want to stretch across 4 time zones. It would make more sense to expand eastward and give WVU a travel partner or 3. That said, I would love for SDSU to join the Big XII so my Jayhawks could come out here more often!

However, the expansion of the Big XII is a precarious venture. Rumor has it that ESPN and FOX are not excited about the idea. Since TV deals seem to dictate these things, I'll be curious to see if the expansion happens at all. Between Texas' stubbornness with the Longhorn network and the huge media companies basically picking winners, the Big XII's days might be numbered even if they added more teams.

Other than a presence outside of their area and possible expansion into a new market I can't see why the conference would take SDSU and their second rate football facilities.

Sad But True!
SDSU has a state of the art weight lifting facilities with no Football field for Saturdays. Only a new stadium will change that.
I'm hoping the Basketball Program is the deciding factor for getting in the Big 12

They have Jayhawk basketball but it is football conference and now with CFP system and the money a conference and its members can get by getting into the playoff I can see it being more of a football decision

I'd like to see them join the B12, although the P12 would be a more natural fit. At least it's not the Big East like they were almost a part of before they folded a few years back!

If they do join an FBS conference, what are the odds that they can figure out and pay for a way to put an actual football stadium on campus? Demolish a couple buildings if you have to. I think it's that important.

Because as a Michigan State alum, there is nothing better than watching an FBS game on an actual campus (tailgating included...and most importantly, no need to commute off campus for the game).

But are they any worse than Connecticut's, Memphis's, Boise State's, etc? At least if Texas or Oklahoma came out, they'd have a large stadium, which can't be said for each school.
