Summarizes what has been said on this board--better pay in Bay Area, millennials find North County boring and prefer to be downtown where there are very few tech jobs.

No surprise. We actually get bombarded with apps when we have an opening but the real talent wants more than we will offer so they go elsewhere.

"Some fresh graduates say they have little interest in living or working in the industrial park atmosphere of Sorrento Valley"

As opposed to the industrial park atmosphere of Silicon Valley???

maybe they were referring to the atmosphere of downtown SF, where there are tech jobs aplenty as well.

"Most of San Diego’s tech jobs are in parts of the city — such as North County or Sorrento Valley — that they consider too far from downtown, San Diego’s cultural epicenter and millennial stamping ground."

I agree with you.

There is an energy and buzz in many parts of the Bay Area that is not present in San Diego. Personally, I *like* that about SD. But if I were a 20-something trying to climb the pay and prestige ladders, I would much prefer SF.

Sure but the majority of tech jobs are located in mind numbingly boring suburbs that comprise Silicon Valley.

I was one of those young tech workers. Lived in a big city for 3 years. Give it 3-4 years and you're sick of the panhandlers asking you for money, want to settle down and have kids, and want to smell non-urine soaked air. Those young tech workers will be ready for the luxury of living AND working in a more suburban area. Big city is cool to experience at first, but after a while, its nicer to just visit the big city.

So ... San Diego isn't for everyone. Good to know.

I just turned down a VERY good job offer because I didn't want to commute into Carmel Valley.

The funny thing is, there is a ton of downtown vacancy, it would be relatively easy for these employers to get a small space downtown so their employees would have a place to go other than the office.

+1

Most of silicon valley is not particularly interesting or hip. It's just a giant suburb (agglomeration of tiny cities) that each have maybe one nice walkable street a few blocks long.

I think the real reason new cs grads want to go to silicon valley is simply better job opportunities. Way more companies, way more startups, and better pay. I knew a few that even took jobs they didn't like at google just to get into the bay area -- they figure once they are there they can move around much more easily as they build their network.

Also it's not just san diego. I have a friend who is the cto of a small startup in LA -- he constantly complains that it's so tough to recruit because everyone wants to be in the bay area.
