I suggest you give Texas more time. I was raised in San Diego and lived here from nearly birth until leaving for college at 18. I returned recently after 15 years out of state. Now that I have a demanding job, a wife, kids on the way, I don't have a lot of time to enjoy what the area has to offer. I basically just pay taxes, enormous rent, fight traffic, work, work, work and come home and do house chores.

Its also gotten really crowded, which makes it hard to get anywhere and enjoy anything, and climate change has made it hotter. It's been 90 degrees in November this year! I visited the village of La Jolla on a Sunday morning and there was nowhere to park, people everywhere. It was like being in LA or at Disneyland. Adding to that, property has gone up so much that I am living for now in a part of San Diego that I really don't enjoy and would like to move out of as soon as possible.

Plus, taxes and fees on everything have gone up a lot in the past 10-15 years in this state. Raising a family here is financially very stressful, especially if your spouse has a strong desire to work part time or not at all.

Would I move back again? Well, I did it for the job, so yes. But if you don't have a reason you have to be here (e.g. work), I would seriously consider giving another state more time. It really isn't the San Diego of your memories. I found that after 15 years out of state, I actually got used being out of San Diego. I'd encourage you to check out Austin, Denver, Seattle, Portland, Chicago (if you can tolerate the cold) and Raleigh/Charlotte, NC research triangle area. Arlington, VA and surrounding area is another option if you are in the government contracting business.

Otherwise, if a person is very wealthy, retied or a DINK, they could move to La Jolla, Mission Beach, Del Mar, etc. and really enjoy what San Diego has to offer. But why deal with so much traffic, taxes and high cost of housing just to live in a very hot inland climate.

SD native. Moved to Charlotte in 2012 and came back to SD in 2014. Thinking of leaving again. Rents are nutz. We pay 3000 for 3/2 1400 sq ft in clairemont. Would rather pay and have a decent commute to UTC for work than pay less to live in the burbs and sown an hour sitting in traffic each way

I could have written what NativeCalifornia wrote.. Really hard on a single income unless it's 200k+ and even then not easy.

I'm sorry, but you got majorly hosed. I pay $3100 for 4/2.5 2220 sq ft in the Poway School District.
