Big cities still behave differently. There has been alot written about this as it pertains to those 'Best Places in the US to Live' articles people like Money and Fortune put together every year. That's why they typically break the cities up and rate them according to different population figures.

Does anybody know if there are any gangs in North Park? I see graffiti here and there, but don't hear much about gang issues in this area. Is it mostly just tagging crews or actual gangs?

It's just tagging crews mostly. Same thing in my neighborhood.

You can tell the difference between gang tags and tagger tags if you know what you are looking at.

Just out of curiosity, how can you tell the difference just by looking at it?

Ditto from me too. I think the education would be instructive for all of us, law-abiding schnooks... or was it schmooks...

Gang Grafitti - very scrawly style. Very rough. Usually goes up on the same place again and again - fences, walls - anywhere you have either a drug spot or a large amount of gang members in the neighborhood. No respect for private property, they will tag on the sidewalk, street, fence, house. Mostly you will see them sign their set, i.e. X3, LH, SESD, SE, ES , etc... You rarely see this outside of a neighborhood with an established gang presence.

Tagger Graffitti - generally tries to be artistic, always signs a moniker for either themselves or their tagging crew. They can be very prolific but mostly tend to respect private property (they won't typically tag on your house). Generally the taggers are harmless, they are more of a nuisance than a threat to safety. You see this all over the city.

Don't be fooled, much of graffiti has nothing to do with gangs, but with "tagging crews."

If there's any association with X3, 13, it's a Southside Latino gang. They are all over the United States. I could tell you a million things about them. They commonly wear dodger blue and are engulfed with sporting dark blue on everything, take pride in the LA sign, are considered the urban Mexicans in old day racism of Mexico. They are extremely predominant in Southern California.

What about Spring Valley? I just moved here last week. My sister said it was safe here. Low crime rate. Is it really safe here or are there gangs here, too? I don't know anything about the counties in San Diego. I still have to drive around and explore. But, I don't want to explore in the wrong territories.

Oh, and I'm new.

Spring Valley has some bad areas and some good areas. Where are you located in SV? There are some rougher parts are located closest to the 125 between Jamacha Blvd and Jamacha Rd, also La Presa has some bad areas. Most of the problems are actually west of the 125 in the Skyline / Jamacha / Lomita Village area.
