We are relocating from Maui and will likely be opening a restaurant in one of these areas. Is there a division of "better" areas and "worse" areas in terms of crime or safety? Are they clearly delineated by streets? It has been about 8 years since we were in SD and we have NO idea if it even matters. We used to live in the Lower Haight if that offers any kind of guideline...

We may not be able to visit before we rent something, so specific details would be great!

general rule of thumb is to stay west of 805, but there are good neighborhoods east of 805 along the north rim of the mesa. Compared to Lower Haight it's all a picnic.

So the neighborhoods aren't broken down like San Francisco where you are among million dollar Victorians and the next block is the projects?

a bit, but not with the extremes of SF. San Diego is a very middle-class city compared to other CA cities.

hillcrest is known for its great restaurants so you should fit in great. it is also a better area. The only other thing you need to know is it is know for its gay/lesbian community. Never bothered me much; we lived in north park and went up to hillcrest all the time. Hubby even loves it.

Thanks for the advice...my husband used to cook in a restaurant near the Castro in SF. He will likely love it as well! Can't wait to get there.
