Check Indeed.com. They are a great source for job postings. Your friend may have to get a job in retail until something better comes along. Since it's after the busy holiday season, not much may be available but it's worth a shot.

What experience does she have, what field or industry has she worked in before? People without degrees seem to land jobs more easily in a field or industry for which they have experience in.

I am mid 40's and had been a stay at home mom for over 20 years. Last November I returned to the workforce. I got a job with the State of California. I've been told that when hiring the State is not allowed to discriminate against age or the fact that I had stayed home to raise my kids.

I got the job by taking state exams (Office Technician, Tax Technician, Personnel Specialist, Program Technician, and Motor Vehicle Representative) and doing well on the exams. After passing an exam, I would apply for every job I was qualified for within a one hour drive from my house. I went on several interviews and then was hired. It took me about three months from taking my first test to getting hired.

I also took exams with my county and a local city. My goal was to get a government job because I need good health insurance and I wanted a job with a retirement plan. I was also offered a county job but went with the state job because the health insurance benefits are more generous.

That's very interesting. I had no idea the state had exams for specific jobs. Nor would I have thought that scoring well on those would override not having a work history.

Don't forget their union which ensures they can never be fired! Makes sense, doesn't it?

County/Local/City/State Jobs probably a great place to get experience and about the most "open" competition you will have, but it can frustrating trying to advance as people spend decades hanging onto positions.

What's the goal?

Is it survive, is survive and thrive, is the job just a means to an end?
Depending on your personality, If you can avoid positions with a W-2 by all means do it.

You can't be fired, but they'll make your life so miserable that you'll quit.

Oh I had plenty of work experience. I graduated from business college and was the bookkeeper for a large HVAC contractor. I also did union and nonunion payroll. My husband has a consulting business and I have done his books (unpaid) for many years.

I had paid work experience (although it was not current) and I did well on the exams I took.

DaisyMae, I was impressed when I read your story this morning. I think you've offered a great example to the OPs friend of how initiative and motivation can help someone who wants to work find a job. I'm sure you are a great employee, too.
