Thank you for the input. I think we will definitely rent first. Honestly, I just want the best for my family meaning good schools, minimal crime, little to no homeless population. I am sure you guys hear that a lot.

The homeless population in San Diego has been growing, so finding a place with a little to no homeless population may be a problem.

I agree with getting to know the area well - maybe rent for a while or do a lot of research about your potential commute.

La Jolla is a very busy area and down in the Village or other areas it can take 20 or 30 min just to get on the freeway! The advantage with the Hospital is it is easy access to the 5. Areas south of the 5/805 merge, Sorrento Valley, Carmel Valley, might be be a real easy commute. And towns North or east as have been mentioned can be OK too. My wife drove for years from La Costa to Sorrento Valley - La Jolla would be just a bit farther - she was able to start early and was on the road by 5:45 though.
good luck

Hi... so glad you are coming to California!... I love Texas but this will be a nice change of pace... I have a neighbor and friend who lives in Carlsbad and works at the VA. He takes the train every day and it works out really well for him. He usually parks at the Poinsettia station but there are a couple to choose from.. He leaves fairly early(6-ish) but gets home pretty early, too (4:30/5:00) so I think the train schedule is pretty accommodating.

Carlsbad is great for families....schools, dog parks, hiking trails (well, ok, you can find that anywhere in San Diego -- haha!)

Good luck to you and the fam... if you want any specific info, just let me know!

Thanks for the welcoming!

How would Poway compare to Carlsbad in terms of living and schools?

Poway has excellent schools. But the commute between Poway and La Jolla isn't trivial.

I honstly dont know why anyone would ant to live in La Jolla. Traffic is a nightmare getting in and out on the daily basis, add a holiday weekend and your basically held captive.

As oddstray indicates, the Poway schools are great and there is quick access to beach, trails, fun, etc. however the commute is really rough and s l o w both ways.

Pardon my ignorance but isn't Poway quite inland? How is it quick access to the beach?

It's 20-30 minutes (depending how far east in Poway you live) during non-rush-hour across SR56 to Torrey Pines Beach.
