I've been in California for about a couple of years now coming home from Illinois, and I was just wondering.. It doesn't seem like California has any real ghettos compared to most of the Midwestern and Eastern parts of the country. I put this in the San Diego category because I didn't want to get any biased answers from cities that have a history of bad areas, assuming San Diego is one of the major cities in California that hasn't had any history of gangs or hoods in the past. Just wondering, thank you.

There are gangs in San Diego, but I can't think of a single place off the top of my head that I can call a "GHETTO" and everyone would agree with me 100%.

Yep, especially today. There is nothing even close to the mess in other large urban centers.

None of these qualifies as a ghetto, compared to some areas in Chicago.

Los Angeles has some areas I suspect would qualify as ghetto (comparable to Chicago ghetto) but I'm not sure since I haven't spent any real amount of time there.

Not even close. Slightly run-down, working class neighborhood? Sure. "ghetto"? nope.

North Long Beach, Watts, Compton, Florence, Vernon, Bell, etc would make most people's "best of ghetto" list.

I have not seen anything that matches the Ghettos back east, NYC, Philly, Camden & Paterson, NJ, Detroit, Miami and etc., the look here is different, no row homes or projects with high rises. East Coast Ghettos are a different breed and vibe, especially during the Summer Months, no A/C so people sit on the porch or street, even in some small cities in PA which had small ghettos, I'd see sofas and lazy boys on the sidewalk with people sitting on them watching cars drive by.

Even the Ghettos in SoFla were different than the Northeast.
