Good suggestion. From both La Mesa and Santee, you can take the trolley right to the Fashion Valley Mall and then walk to work from there.
Obviously, the Trolley also runs through old town and into downtown, but since the original poster indicated that he didn't want too urban an area, that might not work. Once the trolley line to UCSD opens, that might open more options as well, but with a $600,000 top budget, that might limit most of the coastal options.
