Fair Use extract:

Carlsbad is expanding its use of automated license plate readers into a system that aims to collect the registration information of every vehicle that enters the city.

Under the new program, the city will install the cameras on top of six mobile patrol cars and on stationary traffic lights at more than a dozen other locations — primarily at entry points where vehicles come from neighboring cities. The cameras automatically recognize license plates and check the information against a huge law-enforcement database, searching for hits about stolen vehicles, missing persons and other police cases.

The data collected will be deleted after about one year unless it’s needed for a criminal investigation, he said.

Good? Bad? Will more cities follow suit?

They are welcome to photograph my dirty car, plate and all. I pay my bills so nothing to worry about.

I saw this in SoFLa a few times, one city had cop cars with dual cameras on each fender and would drive up and down parking lots of malls, stores and etc and photographed every plate. One nearby town Palm Beach Shores was even mentioned. Keeps out the riff raff.

When people complain that the police aren't trying hard enough to find their stolen car, this is exactly what the police do to find stolen cars. Look at every car.

I have no problem with this. Of course, I'm the one that will wave to the security camera in stores, so I'm probably not the one to debate Big Brother with.....

If you think you and your car aren't already being photographed dozens of times each day as you go about your daily business, you are mistaken. What's one more photo? Smile!

Then why not put it in the part of the city where cars are stolen most
I can Guarantee that, more cars are stolen in other parts of the city of San Diego than Carslbad.
And who going to pay for and monitor this system

And I don't think anyone has any problem with the police reading license plates, even via automated scanners, to look for stolen cars or criminal suspects.

The problem is they're photographing. As in, not "looking for stolen cars", but creating records of who goes where and when. That is not something that happens in a free country. That's a hallmark of a police state.
