My mothers birthday is coming up and I really want to take her somewhere special for dinner. I read the thread with "Best SD restaurants" but I would like to narrow it down to just a few. So, If you were to take your mom out for dinner in San Diego where would you take her? whats a really good place in downtown that would be exceptional or even by the beach?

She enjoys all types of food from Italian to Mexican or Japannese to Indian.

It really doesnt matter the location of the place. Any great restaurants by Balboa Park that would fit the criteria?

I grew up in the SD area so finding my way around will be easy but I didnt spend much time after high school there so it would be great for some suggestions.

These places have a nice dining setting -

-The Prado in Balboa Park for a garden setting
-Bertrand at Mr. A's for city lights and watching the planes land
-Peohe's on Coronado for views of downtown. Park downtown and take the ferry to Coronado Landing where the restaurant is. $2.00 each way.
-Jai is the new Wolfgang Puck just opened a restaurant at the LJ Playhouse at UCSD
-Sky Room at La Valencia in La Jolla
-You can choose any restaurant on 5th Ave, Downtown and sit on the patio and watch people.

If I think of others I'll add them here

I aslo suggest bring her to a pastry place. There's a chocolate place in Little Italy on India St. Buon Appetito (Italian place) is also in Littly Italy on the same street. This combination would be very convenient.

Blue Point Coastal downtown. Expensive, but I love it there. (It's where I would take my mom.)

I love the hummus and the setting at the Prado, but have been disappointed with my dinner the last 2 times I went there.
