The shop that I bought my bike from only sells older road bikes, nothing else. They buy them from yard sales and thrift stores, fix them up and resell them. If you saw my bike (when it was clean and usable), you would never know it was used.

OP -- have you found anything? I've been surprised by the lack of road bike rental options in San Diego given how much road biking goes on. Scottsdale has a lot more options. I've thought about the suggestions to do a quick buy/sell, but have the same problem on the opposite end -- I'm either a 61cm or 63cm. Maybe just rent a beach cruiser single speed coaster bike -- bet you could make the news with that!

I'd check with Adams Ave bicycles. Even if they don't have the bike you're looking for, I'm certain they'll help you find one, whether by guiding you to other shops or finding a loaner from the community. The folks there will be much more knowledgeable and better connected on this subject than the vast majority of folks who post here (myself included)

I found one with pedal to the medal bike shop out in Temecula---they do a lot of bike tours which probably explains the size range. It's an hour away but you got to do what you got to do. Looking forward to my first real trip to California (flying in & out of LAX without leaving airport doesn't count)

Good luck in your event. I'm skipping that one for either bike the coast or big bear. New bike gotta break it in. These winds with marine layer are brutal for deep rims.
