Me and my friend want to move out to California, from the northeast coast. We were thinking about Southern California, maybe San Diego area but looking for a great spot for young people. I've heard of Ocean beach, but what about Huntington Beach or Long Beach, are they all kind of the same? We are kind of free spirited and that is why someone suggested Ocean beach, but at the same time I am looking to real work and it seems like there might be more job opportunities a little more up north. Does anyone have any suggestions for what might be appropriate for some people in their early 20's looking to move to Cali, ideally near the coast?

Not really
OB is quite small and its an area of San Diego, not a city itself.
Huntington is a middle-sized city, but it is a little upscale
LBC is a large city, very diverse and has everything you need within city limits.
If your finances are straight I would go LBC,OB,then Huntington Beach.SD is known to not have that many open jobs but I've heard from a friend who is in Long Beach saying it is very simple to get a job up there.

As far as beach towns, they're all pretty nice in CA. Regarding job opportunities, what kind of work are you looking to get into?

Well I would be looking to go into PR or something like that, I am a marketing intern in NYC currently and my boyfriend is very much into teaching sailing, so if I have to commute that would be okay with me. Basically we are looking for a place that is not too expensive, seeing how we are fresh out of college! But, I've heard that there are areas that are a bit unsafe so I'd like to steer clear of those areas, naturally. Basically, we like good music, the beach and just want to work and enjoy being around people our age.

If you are considering San Diego, try the Clairemont (zip 92111/92117) or Pacific Beach (zip 92109) section.

See this Google map:

San Diego, CA 92109, United States of America - Google Maps

There is a very large bay nearby called Mission Bay where there are lots of sail-boaters, and many other types of boaters. Probably could offer lessons there.

Also just south is San Diego Bay and Point Loma, both which are near downtown. Lots of boating activities down there as well.

As far as Marketing and PR work go, San Diego is a big city, so there are likely many businesses which need people for that field.

This area is filled with people in their early and mid-20's. Many colleges are nearby.

You can find places to live under the housing section of Craigslist:

craigslist: san diego classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events

Huntington Beach is actually a really big city, second largest in OC (behind only Santa Ana, I think). It's a city of nearly 200,000. And when you compare it to Newport, Laguna, and even Seal Beach, Huntington is hardly upscale. Parts of it are downright sketchy.

Here we go again with different perspectives.
For me,a population between 325,000-like 750,000 is a mid-sized city(Oakland,Pittsburgh,LV,Miami,New Orleans,Bakersfield).Anywhere above is a large city(JAX,LA,NYC,SD,Houston,Philadel) and below 325 is a "small" city.I use the word small kind of loosely because some would call CV or Anaheim a mid sized or large city. And yeah you got a point.I got HB confused with NB.My bad.

For a young person Pacific Beach would be far more interesting then Ocean Beach. Everyone in PB seems to be 18-25.
