So I'm moving out here to san diego on the 22nd of this month from tucson. I don't have a job or place I have been looking at craigslist for rooms to rent but not sure if I should call until I arrive in san diego. I currently have a part time job selling on ebay and have few months of rent money. Is it pretty easy to rent a room in san diego without I guess a real job? I'm 20 by the way so I can live cheaply. I'm just afraid I will have to live in my car.

you are right, you might have to live in your car. May I ask, why are you moving with no job, not much money and no place to live...?? Your name indicates you are a college student, but obviously you won't be in the fall unless you have been accepted and are planning on spending a lot on out of state tuition.

There is a nice place in San Diego, classic California architecture in the old buildings, handy to the airport. Room and board is free, plus- free medical care (socialist I guess). Free clothing, and you get a monthly pay check.

This is sheer stupidity. Make sure that your car is comfortable, because if you don't have substantial savings, you will definitely be living in it.

Many, many years ago, we rented a room from someplace in Hillcrest - not my cup of tea even then, but it's usually pretty popular with those that consider themselves young and "hip". It wasn't a private home, more of a hotel feel - we rented by the week. One small room, communal bathroom (ewww!) but as I recall it was cheap and if you paid your deposit, they didn't really care where you got your money from.

Look for something like that - "Room to rent, weekly rates"... not the most upscale, but it's a place to lay your head.

Don't listen to the naysayers. You're young and single and will do fine. If you were in your 40s with dogs and kids I'd say otherwise. The history of California is replete with young people like you who've come and done great things.

^^What he said, except

(A) Understand the odds are against you. Don't be too surprised/frustrated when you eventually have to move back home.

(B) You're not the first or last kid who wants to be poor, but living in paradise. There are hundreds, maybe thousands of similar threads in the LA and NYC forums. What you want isn't unique at all.

(C) Being poor anywhere sucks.

(D) Give it a shot. Who knows. Maybe you're that 1 in a million kid who makes it and we'll be hearing about your success story on the news. Your story can then serve as inspiration for another million kids to move to SD with no job and try their luck.

Also, can you explain how you can be moving to Brooklyn AND SD next month, as you write in your other post?

He can't decide where he's coming from either. In the San Diego post, he's coming from Tucson, but in the Brooklyn post, he's coming from Texas.

I say he's a troll.

You're twenty, you want to rent a room, and you have some cash? You'll be fine! There are three universities is San Diego, so lots of other college students, and this is the perfect time of year to be looking for roommates.

Good luck!
