The entire southwestern part of the U.S. has been unusually dry. Phoenix just had one of the driest meteorological fall seasons on record (September, October, November) with no measurable rain during that period. The high country has received absolutely no snow so far. Early this morning, parts of the Phoenix area as well as the eastern half of the state were hit with some heavy rain. Unfortunately, this system pretty much missed California as it came in from the Gulf of CA. Southern CA is in dire need of moisture, and it is quite unusual for it to be this dry with raging fires in December. The rainy season should have been well under way by now.

Indeed! I’ve found the formula most useful for figuring actual rain falling at your location in the county for a period of time longer than five minutes is to divide by three the percentage chance predicted and subtract at least three from that to yield a realistic potential of you experiencing actual drops of water falling from the sky. Sad but true.

Idiots spinning out on the slightly dampened roads from the mist notwithstanding.

I’ll do my part and wash my car this weekend again.

Sprinkling here- but I’ll take it. It’s wonderful. Going on 300 days without it.

Yet all of the hills and canyons and our gardens are dusty as can be.

I bet we don’t get over 4 inches this season. We have turned into Phoenix by the sea, except that we get but 1/3 the precipitation that it does.

Help me feel better...
This is nothing different than what we saw in 2013, 2014, 2015... And remember last year? Massive rains. So clearly it won't be dry "forever.'

But this is the new normal, thanks to the climate change that our dumbass president doesn't understand: more extremes in weather. Feast or famine. It looks like we're in another drought cycle, as is the over-arching perpetual case for CA and in fact all of Western USA. It will probably go this way a few years and then we'll have another wet one, etc..

Are drought cycles common in the Western US? Please explain how climate change makes the cycles more extreme and what we can expect this next year in terms of weather based on your understanding.

Rained here last night. Our rain gage shows we received about .10 of an inch. Not enough obviously, but it was nice to fall asleep to the sound of rain.
